The process of picking delegates from the Highwood PC Riding Association who'll vote for a new party leader next year is underway.

Association President R.J. Sigurdson says there's a couple of ground rules for those looking to be chosen.

"You have to be a member of the party for a minimum of 14 days prior to the DSM (Delegate Selection) Meeting. Each potential delegate gets a minute to speak on why they think they should be a delegate for the Constituency of Highwood, and then as a whole as members we vote for those delegates to go represent us at the leadership convention coming up March 18th IN Calgary."

Sigurdson, says each riding will have the same number of delegates.

"We have four delegates that will be board members and we have 10 that will be from the constituency and up to three youth going. So, when it comes time to vote, they go and vote who they feel is going to best represent the PC party."

In the past voting for the leader could be done by anyone who bought a party membership, literally right at the time they'd go to vote.

That led to problems over the last few leadership campaigns with people who had no party affiliation other than trying to sway the vote taking out memberships, with many voting "strategically" or in blocks that could seriously influence the vote.

With the delegate system, the members are vetted a little more, which will likely lead to truer results.

Sigurdson says it'll definitely cut down on some of the odd results they've had in other leadership races.

"I do believe it gives a better representation across the Province. We don't end up with lopsided votes from urban areas. And it does definitely get rid of the five minute PC member, yes."

He says the Association will wind up the process and have their delegates selected by  the middle of December.
