Drivers passing through Centre Street in High River on the afternoon of December 5 might have noticed a little commotion, as members of the High River fire department, police unit, EMS and several non-profit organizations took to the busy street, to collect donations and pass out hot chocolate and sweets.

Proceeds raised from the 2018 annual Charity Check Stop, will go to the Salvation Army, Rowan House and Foothills Regional Victim Services.

Program Manager for Foothills Victim Services Kerri Wilkinson says, these funds allows for their organizations continued support of vulnerable community members.

"Tis the season! It's totally voluntary and we are also accepting donations of toys and food for the Salvation Army. Even if you came by and waved we're still going to give you candy canes and hot chocolate. We're just trying to raise funds for victim services in the area and the shelter, it's a great cause."

Team Leader for the Rowan House Brittany Smith says the event highlights the close collaboration the organizations have with both each other and the essential services who support High River.

"We're in close partnership all the time, working together, so it's a great community event for us. We're all in this together, doing the same work and working with the same people."

Smith says shes blown away by the continuous patronage and donations provided by the High River community.

"I just want to thank everyone who has stopped by and is supporting us, even if it's just a quick note of saying thank you. A big shout out to the people who come back year after year and support the event, thank you."

The Okotoks Charity Check stop goes on December 14.
