Some people say that Alberta has the worst drivers.  For those who use the dangerous intersection of Big Rock Trail and Highway 7, they might agree.

Over the past three days there has been two accidents in this area, one bad enough it caused a woman to be airlifted to hospital in serious condition with head injuries.

Dawn Mitchell a Resident of the area say they see a number of collisions and near misses in that specific intersection and she blames impatient drivers.

"Well the problem is, and particularly on my side is that people use the right hand turn lane, as a passing lane." Mitchell adds "Not to mention the fact that people aren't quite as careful driving as they used to be. There's a lot of things to distract them."

The danger happens when the Black Diamond bound traffic is slowed or stopped because someone is trying to turn left onto 16th St West in the only regular traffic lane.  There is a right hand turn lane that connects to Big Rock Trail which runs into Okotoks, and those who can't wait for the car in their lane to move, pull into the turning lane and blow straight through.  Then hitting vehicles coming out of Big Rock trail turning either left or right.

Mitchell says she's even had a few near misses one with a gravel truck.

"I have watched a fully loaded gravel truck with pup, blow through the right hand turn at a highway speed because someone was turning left onto 16th st. West."

Mitchell says had she not have been aware that drivers use that lane continuously to pass, she would have been struck and most likely killed.

When it comes to solutions many are left wondering what can be done.  Mitchell says even some re-education will help the situation as there is already a sign that says turning lane on it, so signage doesn't help.  She's seen the RCMP there before conducting seat-belt checks and catching speeders with radar guns already so she feel's it wouldn't be any more work for them to keep on eye on this problem as well.

"I don't see why they can't sit there, and every time someone blows through passing in the right hand turn lane, that they can't get them."

Many residents are writing letters to their M.L.A's asking for the government to re-design the intersection as well.
