Moving around High River this Spring it sure looks like we've got a bumper crop of dandelions growing.

However, the Town's Parks Supervisor, Tannis Webb says it's more a matter of perception than reality.

"I don't think they're anymore prolific than any other year. Certainly the rains bring them on. And they appear a little more prevalently after the rain and then some heat. Again, they'll show up in the fall. Any worse than usual? Not really."

She says overall there's not much reason to fuss over them too much.

"Dandelions are a cosmetic weed. I don't know if people realize that. They're not a prohibited weed or a prohibited "noxious" weed, as per the weed control act of Alberta. There's no reason why we need to be controlling weeds."

Webb says the Town does spray for dandelions on sports fields and at the cemetery, but they don't have the budget to spray every green space in town.

She also says there's no bylaw on the books forcing property owners to control the weeds on their properties.
