Helmets will be mandatory for those riding any Off Highway Vehicles on public land in Alberta as of May 15, 2017.

The new law requires helmets be worn by anyone riding in, on, or being towed by an off highway vehicle on public land.

There were an average of 19 off highway vehicle-related deaths in Alberta each year between 2002-2013.

During that same period 77 per cent of individuals suffering serious head injuries were not wearing a helmet.

In 2010, Off Highway Vehicle injuries resulted in $50 million in public health care costs.

Fines will range from $93 for not wearing an approved helmet to $155 for failing to wear a helmet.
