The Town of Okotoks is putting its tag on vandals.

Instead of allowing those to bask in their glory of making their mark illegally, the Town is simply taking an eraser to the subject.

Mayor Bill Robertson says it's the only way to deal with destroyers of property.

"If that 'trophy' remains on for months and months or years and years then that's their trophy they get to look at a constant basis," he says. "When it's removed right away, they don't get to enjoy the fruits of their vandalism."

Robertson says the best way to stop future vandalism is to call the RCMP and let the justice system deal with perpetrators.

"If somebody's committing an act of vandalism, go through the full process of the law," he says. "They're unlikely to do it again. It's when somebody gets away with something over and over again becomes more of a problem."

He says the community needs to tell the Town or RCMP when vandalism is occurring or if you see marks on Town property.

"If a resident sees some vandalism occurring, call the RCMP," he says. "If they see the results of vandalism, call the Town office and bylaw enforcement in particular. Town staff will be dispatched to repair, clean-up or whatever it is we're looking at."

Robertson reminds residents if vandalism is done to their homes, the home owner is responsible for cleaning it up but should be contacting police in order to investigate.
