If you're getting tired of all of the little trenches on High River roads you can take comfort in the fact that they'll be gone very soon.

Engineering Inspector with the Town of High River Alexa Levair says it's a necessary part of road repair.

"When we redo a road there is an initial level of asphalt that is put down. Then it is typically left with an inch to two inch lip on the gutter and that's because we let it sit for a year or two depending on the contract and depending on the road, to let it settle."

She says because of the flood in 2013 roads got redone in 2014 and then they left the roads for two winters and 2016 is the year to have asphalt top lifts installed.

She says the inch to 2-inch lip is needed so it'll tie in better to the existing road and she adds the paving will start later this week and should wrap up within a few days.

Engineering Coordinator Sheri Burt with the town says has the game plan.

"This week the work will be going 7th, 8th, 9th and then 5th Avenue starting on Wednesday morning and working their way through those."

She says she doesn't have the schedule for roads in the South East yet but adds it won't be long and asks motorist to be patient for just a little while longer.

She says signs advising drivers of the inch to two inch lip in the road are being stolen at an alarming rate and adds the contractor has had to replace them which isn't cheap to do.

Engineering Inspector Alexa Levair says it's a necessary part of the process.

"Because the flood happened in 2013 roads got redone in 2104, leaving it for two winters 2016 is the year to have a lot of those top lifts installed. Depending on the road, when you are doing a top-lift sometimes they'll cut those little trenches so it'll tie in better to the existing road."

She says the major work has already been done and adds this is just the touching up stage and won't have an impact on local traffic.
