One Okotoks school is laying out the red carpet for local celebrities this week.

Big Rock School kicked off their Literacy Week Monday, January 30, and this year's theme is "Celebrity Readers and Our Community At Work".

Vice Principal at Big Rock, Dave Halase says they've invited guests with an entrepreneurial bent to come in and discuss why literacy is important in their specific place of work.

"We've got a number of people all the way from parents who have students in our facility to names that are out in the community that you'd recognize on a real estate sign perhaps... So in their mind they are not really celebrities because at home they might just be mom or dad but to us they have some wisdom, they have something of immense value to offer to our students. So to us they are celebrities."

Local singer songwriter Brettyn Rose and 2016 Calgary Stampede Indian Princess Savanna Sparvier kicked off Literacy Week by performing and reading to the students.

Halase says these interactions and presentations help students get more involved rather than writing a simple paragraph on the importance of the educational week.

"We want them to investigate how to interview these guests and to think about who is actually coming in and if it was you who wanted to pursue that job what would you need to start to do in your life right now. So what are the things around literacy, around preparedness for a career in this area, what would you need to get in place right now."

The vice principal says the students really respond well to this theme.

"The students love these people, it's amazing. We have little book marks for them and they always race up after and get autographs from the celebs and pose for photos with them. So I would say we are actually accomplishing our goal because that connection has been established and they love seeing these people...and so many of these celebrities recognize how important this is."

Big Rock School will have over 50 guests, including MP John Barlow, the Eagle 100.9's Logan Coutts and Councillor Tanya Thorn, and will have almost 100 different classroom visits from all these celebrities during the week.

Singer Tanya Ryan will close the week long celebration on Friday, February 3, and Halase thanks everyone for taking the time out of their days to connect with the students and for teaching them the importance of literacy in the workplace and in life.
