A High River man has paid seven years worth of property taxes on a property he no longer owns.

He approached High River Town Council last month, looking for a refund of $28,951.89 for property taxes he had paid on a property he hadn't owned since 2012.

Town Council granted him the refund, and the seven years worth of property taxes must now be paid by the person who bought the property back in 2012.

The Town's Chief Financial Officer, Kola Oladimeji, says no interest will be tacked onto the money owed.

"Because someone else has been paying us, so as far as the Town we have not lost any money. The old property owner was paying each month."

Oladimeji says before an agreement or payment plan can be reached other work must be done.

"Until we notify the land titles. So once we put notification on the land titles, then we will write the property owners to come and make an agreement with us."
