The tragic collision that occurred in Saskatchewan last week has sent shockwaves of sadness and grief throughout our country and beyond.

The Humboldt Broncos Junior A Hockey Team was travelling to Nipawin, Saskatchewan for a semi-final hockey game. A collision between a semi truck and their team bus claimed the lives of 16 people and left 13 injured.

And many in the hockey community, from minor leagues to the NHL, have come together in tribute to those who lost their lives and in support and solidarity with all those affected.

The Okotoks Minor Hockey Association has added its voice to those offering support and condolences with a statement that was released to its membership over the weekend.

OMHA President Geoff Stewart says the effects of the tragedy have been far-reaching.

"Everyone who begins hockey starts somewhere," he says. "You build the bonds with your friendships, you build the bonds with coaches and families. It's a social environment in Canada. It's obviously our passion and I think it just touched everyone, everyone who's stepped into a rink and played hockey or hopped on a bus."

Stewart says as an organization, OMHA is deeply saddened by the tragedy and they've received numerous inquiries from members wishing to provide their support.

"The Humboldt community, and especially those boys, need everyone in this country right now," he says. "It's sad and the families need support from everyone. As an organization from Okotoks, we just want to extend the branch and extend our love to everybody and support if needed."

He says they're suggesting OMHA members who wish to provide support visit the GoFund Me page set up for those affected.

Okotoks residents were among many who have left hockey sticks on their front porches in tribute to the Humboldt Broncos and all those who lost their lives in the tragedy.

"Everyone right now is filled with green and yellow," Stewart says. "And, as they say, we're all Humboldt Broncos right now."
