"We started this Boys Steer Riding School in connection with Calgary Stampede to train young riders how to get on these animals safely. That was the first Rodeo School that the Stampede had that ran for five, or six, years I guess. A lot of those kids that came to the steer riding school, they went on the become saddle bronc and bareback riders, and bull riders."

Scott says It's an honour to be nominated.

"They preserve history and heritage, and they recognize people from young people to older people that do a lot of volunteer type things."

Scott has also been supplying livestock for the Calgary Stampede Parade since he was 18-years-old, and has served on numerous Stampede committees.

The award ended up going to Peter Spear who's, in a relase the Stampede describes as:

"His passion for the outdoors has led him to volunteer in five Provincial parks and recreation areas for over 25 years. His involvement with trail maintenance and stewardship at Brown-Lowery Provincial Park in Priddis, AB has inspired a group of over 300 family, friends and colleagues to help maintain these trails for the benefit of the community and visitors. Peter is motivated by his own family history as emigrants to Canada to build community and by his love of the outdoors to share with others through the Everyone Belongs Outside initiative to make parks more accessible and user friendly."
