Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for southern and central Alberta, including Calgary, Okotoks, High River, Claresholm and Lethbridge.

Because of several intense wildfires burning in the Pacific Northwest, the smoke haze from these fires are expected to makes their way to the Foothills today.

It's uncertain how much smoke will settle in this week, but Environment Canada is warning there could be significant reductions in both air quality and viability.

Smoke haze can have a greater impact on children, elders and people with respiratory illnesses, so it's best to avoid going outdoors, if possible.

In a previous interview with Okotoks Fire Chief Ken Thevenot, he said it's best to take precautionary measures to stay safe.

"If you have to go outside, try minimize physical activity outside," Thevenot said. "Also check the weather and check the winds. Wind directions and wind speeds might bring in more smoke conditions."
