Alberta driver's licences and ID cards are getting a makeover.

The Province says the cards cost less to manufacture and thanks to advances in technology, will save taxpayers more than $1 million annually.

The new design is meant to help better protect against counterfeiting and ID theft with features like clear windows, laser engraving, and 3D embossing.

Included will also be images from Alberta's history and landscape like Castle Mountain, the Bow River in Banff, a Wild Rose, and an Albertosaurus.

The new cards are in production and the Province has said there's no need to replace current licences or ID cards as they'll be phased out through the normal renewal process as they expire.
