A High River couple have started to collect Christmas ornaments for those that lost everything in the devastating fires of Fort McMurray.

Organizer Terry Lempriere says, after the flood in 2013 they know what it's like to lose everything.

"All the decorations, trees and ornaments that have been handed down in the family have been destroyed. You don't really think about those things until the last minute."

He says they're looking for stockings, lights, artificial trees and gift wrapping.

"We ask that people bring them in boxes like an apple or banana box, or something like that with a lid so that we can stack and secure it in the trailer and doesn't get damaged on the way up."

Helga Lampriere says she remembers what it felt like when people gave them Christmas decorations after they lost everything in the flood.

"The way that outreach helped us to have a happy Christmas again without the added stress of having to buy all these ornaments on top of the gifts had a huge impact on us."

They're reaching out to individuals and businesses in High River to donate new Christmas ornaments and decorations to one of three collection centres in town.

The three donation locations in High River are:

High River Baptist Church - 514160 121 Street E.

High River Full Gospel Church - 1802 9 Avenue S.E.

High River Alliance Church - 13318 9 Avenue S.E.

Deadline for donations is October 30.
