After pulling over a motorcyclist travelling over 150 km/h in a 60 zone in June, Okotoks RCMP are reminding motorists the importance of driving the speed limit.

RCMP say on Jun. 21, 2015, the driver of a back Kawasaki motorcycle was pulled over after being clocked at 156 km/h in a 60 km/h zone on 32 St. E.

Okotoks RCMP Sgt. Sukh Randhawa says the driver of the motorbike received more than just a ticket and a slap on the wrist.

"The driver of the motorcycle was arrested by RCMP members and was given a violation ticket for a Traffic Safety Act offence for exceeding the posted speed limit," he says.

Randhawa says while the RCMP understand many motorists go a few kilometres over the speed limit, there's a point where it becomes a criminal offence.

"Most of the people are aware and cognizant of the speed limit," he says. "But, when it's too excessive, like this person was driving at 156 km/h in a 60 km/h zone, that's way over the speed limit. It's dangerous for himself, and it's dangerous for the public as well."

Randhawa says speed limits aren't put in place so police can ticket drivers, but rather to save lives.

"The police expect citizens to follow that speed limit," he says. "I understand there are some occasions where people are in a hurry, or need to get somewhere in a hurry, but again we encourage people to abide by the speed limit."

According to Randhawa, the driver of the motorcycle is set to appear in a Calgary court.

He says if anyone has any information on this incident, or any case of excessive speeding, they should call the RCMP at 403-995-6440.
