After almost seven years, the long awaited work on the southwest berm in High River is underway.

Mayor Craig Snodgrass says it's been a long, hard road to get there.

"It's just a really great feeling to actually see that project actually taking place now. It's been a lot of years of a long grind of getting the approvals and getting the public consultations and landowner consultations and issues dealt with. At the end of the day to see that project starting is just a great feeling."

He says even with all the protections in place since the flood, every time it rains in the Spring, High River residents flock to the river to take a look for themselves at the rising water.

"Oh yeah, it's the sport of High River, keep your eye on that thing. You know, the level of protection we have in this town, we are the most well protected town in Canada from flood risk at this time and with the southwest berm coming into play, we'll just expand on that."

Snodgrass says the work on the berm should be done by Fall, and then the Town will spend next year rebuilding 12th Avenue west of the traffic circle.
