The McLaughlin Meadows Community Gardens continue to grow.

The group looking after it will be adding a community tool shed full of new gardening tools and compost bins, which will be available in the next couple of months.

Volunteer Melissa Pryor says they applied for financial assistance to get the items from the Community Vitality Fund.

"We were recipients of that $2,000 and we're in the process of collecting those dollars and using them to buy supplies so we can build this tool shed down at our community garden."

Pryor says the garden tools will be available for those who have rented spaces.

In addition there will be compost bins for everyone to use the organic waste to nourish their gardens for years to come with the goal of the garden to be self-sustaining.

"We want to ensure that all the organic matter and waste stays in the garden and is reused. We added compost bins and through that we will be able to keep all of our waste right in the garden."

"One of the volunteers that is leading the construction is trying to organize a green house section for the tool shed, so it will be half tool shed and half green house."

She says there may even be space to grow flowers and herbs on the roof as they're looking at including a green roof made of nutrient rich soil on top of the structure.
