The High River Rotary Club will build a memorial clock tower in town to commemorate the 2013 flood event. Rotary Member Hank Leeferink says they hope to have the clock tower built in two years for the flood's five year anniversary.

"We're coming up to the fifth anniversary and the idea is that we think it's time. Some people say well, let's not remember it. No, we have to. I was, it is a major part of every street, every life in town. So, we thought it was important."

He says the clock tower will be built by local artist Bob Pike.

"So the idea is that it's locally built. He was in the floods, he felt it. So he knows what we're looking for to reflect it instead of just 'I'll take plan A, send it up.' So this will be unique to High River."

Leeferink says it's worth it to commemorate the struggles of those affected in the 2013 flood.

"We feel it's an important cause, and so it's worth it. You know I don't want to give speeches or anything like that. Just, it's a beautiful piece of art. The plaque will be nicely written. We also want to say thank you to the volunteers. Put it down so that when your kids go oh ya, this is what changed southern Alberta."

Leeferink says the Rotary Memorial Tower Clock is now past it's conceptual stage as town council has approved the plan to have it built. There are three possible locations, but he says council supports his prefered location across from the 7-11 downtown.
