The mobile breast cancer screening unit is headed to High River where it'll set up shop starting Saturday.

The community coordinator of Screen Test, Harmony McRae, says it's open to women from all over the area.

"We have a target group and they are women aged 50 to 74 and they can self-refer so that means that they don't have to have a family physician to come and see us, they can just call us and make an appointment themselves," McRae says. "For women 40 to 49 if they do want to get a mammogram they should really discuss that with their doctor, they do need a referral for their first mammogram, and that's kind of across the board in Alberta."

She says they go to 120 communities a year and most of them in rural areas so anyone from in and around High River is welcome to come out.

McRae says it takes two to three weeks to get results and a copy is also sent to the woman's doctor in case they have any questions or need follow up tests.

One in every eight women in Alberta will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime and McRae says they know catching it early can make a huge difference in positive outcomes.

Women are asked to bring in their Alberta Health Care card.

The mobile unit will be in High River from Sat. August 13 to Tues. August 23.

McRae says anyone who wants more information can call 1-800-667-0604 toll free across Alberta.
