An earthquake measuring 5.8 on the Richter Scale, centred in Lincoln, Montana rattled some homes in the Foothills around 12:30 a.m., Thursday, July 6.

Area resident Crystal Leach Affleck says it woke her up.

"I was just laying in bed and finally able to find some rest, and by myself out in the country, and woke up and it honestly felt like there was somebody shaking my house."

No one was injured in the quake, which the U.S. Geological Survey says could be felt as far north as Calgary

Camille Brillon, seismologist with Natural Resources Canada, says the distance the 'quake was felt was relative to its strength.

"The distance you feel the earthquake is dependant on the size so for a magnitude of 5.8 it's very likely you'll feel it 400 kilometres away."

Brillon adds anyone who feels they've felt an earthquake can report the event online.
