The Museum of the Highwood is looking to take on a bigger role in the community by adding the Visitors Information Centre to their umbrella of services.

Director Irene Kerr says they have been unofficially filling in the role for quite awhile.

"We get visitors all the time anyway," said Kerr. "And we are open seven days a week, year round. If they couldn't find the visitors information centre or if it was off season they would always end up at the museum anyway. So we are just kind of providing the service we always have, it's just more formal."

Kerr adds they have to be accredited and they need to make sure they know what they are talking about.

Director Irene Kerr says they have hired a coordinator and are looking to hire two summer students as well.

"We are hoping they can get out and about more."

Talking to visitors who are out on the streets and going to events will be part of the job description for the new hires.

Along with events she is hoping the travel information centre can also work with local businesses to help promote the town.

She is also hoping to have stronger ties to the business community.

"We really want to connect to businesses and people who are running events."

The reason for the visitor centre is to help people who have come to town.

"And keep them informed as to what they can see and do and where they can go shop and eat and stay."

They will be going to visit as many businesses as they can to gather information on when they are open and what they sell.

"We really want to get that communication going, that is a big part of it."

They officially opened May 1.
