Children from the Okotoks Rec Centre day programs made their way down to the Okotoks Museum to begin their version of harvest last Friday.

Back in July vegetables were planted out front of the museum as part of their community garden.

Museum specialist Cathy Coutts says the harvest was quite the experience for the kids involved.

"The kids had lots of fun pulling out, potatoes, beets and onions and I think they had a lot of fun especially the kids that were here who planted and now were able to see what came from those little itsy bitsy seeds."

Coutts believes through the community garden planting that children see the value in fresh grown produce.

"I think kids learned that fresh produce can come from the garden not necessarily the store."

Coutts says it was quite the haul out a small patch of dirt.

"You can buy a seed package for very little money and that little package of seeds produces a large amount of food."

After the Harvest was over, Coutts washed all the vegetables and then made her way to the Okotoks Foodbank and donated all the fresh produce to families who need it most.
