Despite the fact museums in Alberta can now open their doors again, the Museum of the Highwood will remain closed for now.

Curator, Irene Kerr, says they need to do a few things before they can open up for the Summer.

"We're going to stay closed. We still have to do a lot of things to get ready. There's a lot of regulations and a lot of different ways we're going to have to figure out how to do things. So, we need some time to get ready for all of that and hopefully get some staffing in place."

She says they're looking at opening possibly by the middle of June.

She says even with less international travel expected this Summer, they could still be very busy.

"You know the provincial government is encouraging Albertans to stay in Alberta and travel and so one of the usual travel destinations are museums. I don't know, it's so hard to predict what's going to happen. I know I'm not going far. But you never know, there might be a lot of people that want to travel. Particularly people like "Heartland" fans."

Kerr says they need time to get the museum ready to comply with COVID-19 regulations to ensure the safety of both staff and visitors.

She says the Tourism Information Centre in the museum remains open.
