Anyone who's been to the Bar U Ranch National Historic Site knows Licorice and Smudge.

They're a pair of Percheron draft horses that work at the ranch and represent it at events like local parades and at the Calgary Stampede.

Mike McLean at the Bar U says they're getting some company, a 5 and an 8-year-old Percheron, but they need names.

"As for rules, we thought it is one of those things where you would kind of like to have a nice, short, simple name for each horse because it's much easier to convey the  commands you want to do if you don't have to yell out a three or four-syllable name," he says. "They (the public) have plenty of time to put their thinking caps on and come up with a nice, short simple name and if you want to put a historical context in or something that is specific to our area and ranching well. that would be very apt for these Percheron horses."

The deadline for submissions is February 29, 2016.

According to Parks Canada since it was established in 1882, the Bar U relied on teams of Percheron horses. They hauled feed to cattle during the winter, harvested hay, cultivated fields and helped harvest crops.  In the early part of the 1900's, George Lane, the second Bar U Ranch owner, brought together herds of Percherons from France and the United States to build the largest and arguably the most famous Percheron herd in the world. At one time, it numbered over a thousand.
