With the legalization of cannabis coming up quickly, Nanton Town Council is working to ensure they have the proper bylaws in place for anyone wanting to open a business.

Council had an initial presentation from the Old Man River Regional Services Commission at the last meeting.

Mayor Jennifer Handley says they are just getting starting.

"They were just giving us an initial presentation on what we should do to prepare and change bylaws in case a business wants to come in," said Handley. "Be it either a retail business or an agriculture business that wants to grow it. How do we prepare our land use bylaws for this upcoming law."

She adds it was an interesting conversation and they are having a deeper conversation at the May 22nd meeting.

"And really gather more information and what direction do we want to take. With this council being very business focused we want to be proactive and get this done so in August we can push go."

Handley admits they are behind the eight ball.

She adds they are going to look at what other municipalities are doing and perhaps copy and pasting their land use bylaws that work for Nanton instead of inventing everything from the ground up.

"How can we tie it into our municipality, that's really the most practical way for us rather than tying up our staff fully for truly at the end of the day it could just be what could be one business."

'What do we need to do, and what is practical with our resources," said Handley.
