Residents in the Town of Nanton will be getting their first automated garbage and recycling pickups this week.

CAO Kevin Miller says the new service starts on Tuesday (Sept 5) for garbage and Wednesday (Sept 6) for recycling.

"We want the automated carts to be put onto the street with the wheels of the cart up against the curb," said Miller.

The Town chose to go with this program when the garbage contract came due.

They found the automated pickup service, with a curbside recycling pickup component only cost one dollar a month more per home than the contract where the garbage had to be physically lifted into the truck.

"It is the way we are saving a lot of money on this program so most people are supportive of that program. The debate over the front yard pickup over the backyard pickup has been very, very loud over the last few weeks."

Miller added there is a fifty/fifty split between the two options but it is cheaper to go with the front yard option.

The other debate has been over the recycling centre which has been well used over the last few years.

It will remain open but there will be a few changes.

"We are going to have a couple of very large bins down there. One will be for mixed recyclables same as your blue cart, and the other will be for cardboard because we can sell cardboard for a dollar or two from time to time."

They are also keeping it open for residents of the MD of Willow Creek to continue to use.

The recycling centre also accepts yard waste, branches, tires and electronics.
