The Town of Nanton is working on a plan to streamline garbage and recycling collection for the fall.

Kevin Miller, chief administrative officer, says when administration started to look into a new garbage contract he was shocked  what they found.

Turns out, it is cheaper to hire a company to do both garbage and curbside recycling, than just garbage pickup.

"The massive shocking piece that we discovered in all of this we were able to take a program that would do a curbside cart based pick up of garbage, a curbside commingled recycling pick up as well on anther day of the week, and keep our recycling depot open... for about $75,000 a year less than we are doing the entire program with only a depot and a backyard pick up."

The costs were dramatically improved when changing to an automatic cart-based system.

Miller said it is very exciting to be able to offer better quality service, for less money.

The recycling facility will stay open for business clients, MD of Willow Creek residents and for people who want to use it.

He adds the town is very early into the process of changing over and will be providing more information as things move forward.

The recycling centre will also continue to have a place to drop off grass clippings, tree branches and electronics.
