Winter can be a tough season for seniors, but a new program in Nanton called Nanton Walks, will help keep them healthy and connected.

Executive Director of the Nanton Quality of Life Foundation Nicole Van Langen says seniors can come out to the program at the Bomber Command Museum three times a week.

She is excited to finally have this program after working on it for a few years.

"We just haven't had a walking program in Nanton," said Van Langen. "We came up with a really fantastic partnership with the Bomber Command Museum, they host the program, and the Nanton Legion is incredibly generous and they fund the program."

The program is free for participants and runs Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 9:30 to 11:30.

"The first day was fantastic. It just seems to be growing and growing. We had only started it last week and it has already been hugely successful."

And she says walking outdoors is lovely, but anyone with mobility issues can have problems especially when you add in icy roads and sidewalks.

"On the surface it looks like it's just a get out and get healthy keep your heart healthy and walk but it is really about providing opportunities for people, reducing isolation."

Winter can be hard, it's hard to get out and people are often affected with the lack of sunshine.

"Being able to get out and connect with other people is huge."

And it turns out a lot of people were leaving Nanton to take part in programs like this in other communities and now they can stay at home.

The program is free but you do need to register by calling the Nanton Quality of Life Foundation at (403) 646-2436. For more information check out their Facebook page.
