Like every other municipality in the Foothills the Town of Nanton is dealing with issues around the legalization of marijuana.

Mayor Jennifer Handley says they passed first reading of their land use bylaw regarding it Monday, July 23.

"So what we've decided is we'll do a survey with the community and of course there'll be a public panel that they can come to the council meeting if they have any issues or concerns with the bylaw that we're passing, then certainly we're looking for feedback on this."

Handley says she's not hearing a whole lot from residents one way or the other on the issue.

She says she's had a couple of e-mails, but otherwise she says most people have accepted it's going to be legal for sale come October 17.

She says she wants to have everything in place before that day so Nanton can hit the ground running and not lose any potential businesses to other towns in the area.

Handley says administration has already fielded some requests from potential business owners.

She says they'll hold the public hearing immediately before their next council meeting on Monday, August 13.
