One of the best indicators that Spring is here and Summer is on the way is the annual Spring bird migration.

And Frank Lake east of High River is a great space to watch it happen.

Local Biologist Greg Wagner says thanks to Spring coming early, the show has already started.

"The Swans are moving through in big numbers right now. We've got both the Trumpeter and Tundra Swans here. Canada Geese are back as well, and there's probably about 14 or 15 species of ducks here right now too."

Wagner says there's plenty of information for those heading to the bird blind at Frank Lake with charts and other sources showing what animals and birds you're likely to see on your visit there. Photo - Russell Skeet.

Wagner says some of the smaller birds, that nest along the shore, are still on their way.

"They're just starting to show up. We've had reports of Red Headed Blackbirds and Yellow Headed Blackbirds and Meadowlarks and such. It's still a little chilly for them, so they're probably still a week or two away."

Wagner says the smaller songbirds, like Yellow Finches, usually show up in numbers in May.

He says every time you go to Frank Lake you see something different, as many species are just passing through on their way to their breeding grounds in Northern Alberta and the Arctic.
