The Alberta Youth Entrepreneurs Camp is coming up again this summer.

It's a chance for young people from 13 to 15 years of age to learn all about starting and running a successful business from the ground up.

The camp is held at the Eagle's Nest Ranch in Cypress Hills, Alberta from August 14 to 20.

Camp Director John Lockhart with Community Futures, Highwood says teaches all about entrepreneurship in a fun way.

"Eagle's Nest Camp has a lot of fun activities for the kids to do after they spend a day learning about business and doing business plans and doping budgets and it culminates at the end of the day that they get interviewed by a real banker that comes out from Medicine Hat, that interviews them, reads their business plan, critiques it and they apply for the dollars they need to get raw product to make a product that they can sell," Lockhart says. "They go buy the product, they build their product and on Saturday when the parents and siblings and grandparents show up at the camp they have their business day where they sell their product."

The teams of six take the money they make and pay off their loans and split the profits. Lockhart says of the 170 teams over the years, he's only seen three that didn't make a profit.

They get great support for sending young people from the foothills to the camp.

"Various organizations provide the $1,000 scholarship required for the youth to attend the camp," he says. "High River Rotary sponsors kids for us, Okotoks Rotary Club sponsors kids, various Chambers of Commerce throughout the region, Vulcan, Nanton, Diamond Valley and Okotoks and High River, those chambers get involved with us on a regular basis to sponsor these scholarships to make sure our youth have an opportunity to go to this camp."

Lockhart says on the first day the campers are teamed up in groups of six from all different regions and they have to bond over the week and determine each member's strengths and weaknesses and work through all of that before even getting to a business idea and business plan.

Youth that are interested are encouraged to visit www.ayec.ca and fill out an online application or contact their nearest Community Futures office or Rotary club. They can also visit the Alberta Youth Entrepreneur Cam Facebook page and click on the "like" button.
