The Town of High River is hosting a pair of emergency preparedness workshops this weekend.

Director of Emergency Management Carly Benson, says the first one Saturday is aimed at the Town's growing Filipino Community.

"From what I understand from the Filipino Community, what we're trying to achieve here is nothing new to them. It's something that they do in their country, which is also very prone to disasters. And so, we're hoping to build on that cultural understanding and learn as much from them as they do from us."

She says they have about 27 people signed up which is more than they expected.

Sunday's workshop and seminar is for everyone else.

Benson says getting to know your neighbours and being able to find an escape route out of Town in the event of an emergency are the two main focuses of the seminars.

"That is one of the most important things we can go over with residents to make sure that they're thinking about how they can get safe and if they start to lose communications and cell networks are down. How are they going to connect with their family? How do they go somewhere where they family is going to meet up with them because there's nothing more terrifying in a disaster than not knowing where you're loved ones are."

Both seminars run at the Charles Clark Medical Centre in High River from 9 A.M. until 4:30 P.M. Saturday and Sunday.
