Despite some hiccups along the way, a new Alberta First Responders Radio Communication System is generally working well.

Alberta's Chief Paramedic Darren Sandbeck says the new system brings together Emergency Medical Services from different jurisdictions.

"The benefit of the radio network allows for true interoperability between agencies through the creation of mutual aid channels," he says. "We need to be able to talk to our responding partners, we need to be able to talk to other ambulance that are coming into the same event, to fire departments that may already be on scene or are coming to the scene so it is important for us."

He says they are trying to work out any issues with coverage areas.

"We're working really closely with Service Alberta, who's actually the owner of the network, as government, to identify where those are and what plans we can put in place to improve that coverage," Sandbeck says.

He says municipalities are working separately to bring their fire departments on line and police may eventually be included.
