The Tom Hornecker Recreation Centre in Nanton is turning the racquetball courts into a new hockey shooting room.

Town Council approved the move to lease the space to Coast-to-Coast hockey development to set it up as a shooting room for kids and adults to improve their stick handling, passing and shooting skills.

The racquetball courts useage has really fallen off in recent years and has only been used twice in the last three months.

Mayor Jenn Handley says when the request to lease the space came in they did some investigating.

"Administration started to dig deep to see who actually uses that facility," said Handley. "I think in the last three months only two people have used it."

Council was told over the past years the space has been looked at for dance, yoga and other activities but because of the half-door entrance and the space size no one wanted to rent it.

"The racquetball court has definitely been one of the most underused parts of that facility."

Nanton Town Council approved the agreement at their last meeting.

The Town will need to install a new door, power outlets and maintain the fixtures while the lease holder will ensure the floors and walls are protected.
