How many people does it take to change the light bulb in a street light?

We are about to find out, as Fortis Crews come to High River starting at the beginning of June to change out the old high pressure sodium bulbs and replace them with LED bulbs.

Communications Advisor with Fortis Alberta, Natasha Russell, says they received approval from the Alberta Utilities Commission to proceed with the conversion to 130 communities.

"We are looking to begin end of May, so May 29th, or there about we should have crews out in your community," said Russell.

Besides using less power and saving communities money on their power bills they are also better for the night skies.

The lights are dark sky friendly with "zero up-light" which means less light pollution and sky glow as the light is directed down.

LED lights produce a whiter light which is higher light quality and improves safety.

Now, street lights are made with high-pressure sodium bulbs that have an orange glow.

It will take a year to convert all 130 communities on the list.
