One energy provider in Alberta is stepping up to help women escaping domestic violence.

The Executive Director of the Rowan House Women's Emergency Shelter, Sherrie Botten, says Direct Energy is doing their part to help with the Province's "Safer Spaces" program.

"Direct Energy's program does several things. They're waiving the $200 deposit for account set up. So for a new account, when a woman is involved in a Safer Spaces Certificate program. They're assisting with short term financial instability. So they're protecting that account from disconnection for a minimum of one year."

The "Safer Spaces" program allows women escaping abuse to break a lease without financial penalty.

She says just over 700 women so far in Alberta have taken advantage of the program.
