People with mobility issues that like to watch hockey or lacrosse at the Tom Hornecker Recreation Centre in Nanton will now have a new viewing option.

A new wheelchair accessible seating area has been installed thanks to lots of support from the community.

Nanton Mayor Jennifer Handley says the Nanton Future Foundation spent a year putting the project together.

"They spearheaded it they did all the designs," said Handley. "They worked with 2-W Equipment and they built this ramp."

She added they already have people taking advantage of the new area with fans and parents finally being able to watch their kids play hockey.

"It is a huge asset to that facilty."

Before it was built people with mobilty issues had to figure out a way to try to climb the stairs or try to look over the boards.

"It really wasn't ideal at all."

Nanton's 2-W Livestock helped out in a big way by preparing the engineered drawings, ordering the required materials, painting and installing the final project with Kurt and Brady Sandberg welding the unit.

They also received support from Home Hardware and the Town of Nanton committed to installing heat units for the seating area.

The ramp was estimated to cost $18,000 and it came in at $15,855.

The Nanton Future Foundation covered $9,000 with the Booster Club donating $1,500.

Town Council voted to cover the remaining $5,355 at their last meeting.
