A bunch of changes to workplace rules came into effect in Alberta starting Monday, January 1.

The majority have to do with various types of leaves, either maternity or taking care of sick or dying relatives.

Eligibility rules for those leaves have also changed, and become easier to get.

Other things like being able to bank overtime at 1.5 hours for each hour of overtime worked, as well as new standards for holiday and vacation pay, along with terminations and termination pay or layoffs.

Employers also face a new penalty system if they don't follow the new rules.
