As we prepare to say goodbye to 2017 and welcome 2018, many people are contemplating New Year's resolutions.

And improving fitness is often at the top of the list.

Okotoks fitness instructor Tamara Boivin says adopting a new, healthier lifestyle is a good idea, no matter what time of year.

"I think a lot of people wait for New Year's, they wait for the beginning of January," Boivin says. "And I think you should just seize the moment. Every day, every breath, every step should be a new idea of who you want to be and what path you want to be on."

Boivin points out that paying attention to the foods we eat can be a foundation for any new fitness program.

"Diet is a huge thing," she says. "And I don't mean diet as in you have to be on a diet. But what you put in your body is going to fuel you or it's going to keep you where you're at. So, just trying to find better food choices, maybe switching out the pop or the alcohol for water. There's so many small things that you can do."

Boivin points out that adopting a balanced approach to fitness, with rest and relaxation worked in, working out with a buddy and being surrounded by positive influences can all help with motivation and increase the chances of success of a new fitness program.

"Spend time with people that inspire you and make you want to be better," she says. "And not feel like you have to compete, but to rise to the occasion and just be the best you can. You want to surround yourself with cheerleaders."
