Residents of Okotoks will have a chance to find out how they can help Syrian refugees if they were to call Okotoks home.

More than 25,000 Syrians will be in Canada by early 2016, fleeing from the hostility that occupies their former home.

The Okotoks Alliance Church will be having an information session Thursday night for those with interests or just basic questions.

Pastor Lee Umbach says the session will help many understand what they are trying to do along with the Town.

"There's a lot of concerns out there, a lot of questions, a lot of misinformation and I think this is just a good way for us to come together and process that as a town to see how can we get involved, how can we do it properly and put procedures in place before hand and do it really well and support these people," he says.

Umbach says he wants to make it clear though that this is not a direct plan by the Church or the Town, just simply as said before an information session.

"It's not a 'This is what we're doing' and we just want to put together an information session," he says. "That's the key is that its not a commitment to one way or another it's just kind of getting a feel about how we can support refugees better."

A group of Churches along with the Alliance Church has been acquiring about the Syrian refugees and Umbach says they have had some inquiries from the Town of Okotoks.

"We were approached by the Town saying that they'd like to get involved, and if we knew anyone else that was getting involved with the refugee situation and the crisis going on and just a little bit more information and the Town said they wanted set-up a town meeting just to kind of get the information out there and see how it comes together as a community."

The meeting goes Thursday night at Pason Centennial Arena from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Foothills MP John Barlow will also be in attendance.
