Larry Mapoy, Projects Manager with Jubilee Engineering, says the new sidewalk will offer convenience for residents in Okotoks.
The Town of Okotoks is working to make active transportation safer for residents.

At a public information session Monday night the Town showed plans for a 1.5 meter sidewalk along the north side of Stockton Avenue between North Railway Street and 32nd Street.

Larry Mapoy, Projects Manager with Jubilee Engineering who's been contracted for the job, says the construction would require a few trees to be removed but that the pathway will offer convenience to Okotokians.

"We would want to have all those nice mature spruce trees removed, there's lots here, and then on the north side there's not much... the foot traffic from the residents could use the north side going to 32nd and join the adjoining pathways there."

Engineering Inspector with the Town Karin Finney says the addition of the concrete sidewalk is long overdue.

"It had been missing a sidewalk or any kind of link for years. Now that 32nd Street has opened up it's quite busy... obviously now there's a need to have an actual sidewalk in place."

Finney says the sidewalk will be wide enough for cyclists to use as well.

Weather permitting, construction is expected to take about three weeks.
