The Town of Okotoks has taken its first steps towards being a more active town.

After a tireless effort by the Active Transportation Committee, Council endorsed the Active Transportation Strategy, aimed at making Okotoks a more walk-able, ride-able town.

Mayor Bill Robertson says Council is excited to get behind the strategy.

"It's being pro-active in promoting active transportation," he says. "Basically, it's people moving under their own human-power, not being transported through mechanical devices such as automobiles, motorcycles, and so on."

Robertson says the Town already boasts plenty of walking space and he's looking forward to seeing even more.

"I think the count now is approximately 79 kilometres of walking, cycling and running pathways within the Town of Okotoks," he says. "So, there's plenty of opportunities for people to get out and get active."

Robertson says the next step is for administration come back to Council with an implementation plan.

"We would definitely want to make sure a plan like this doesn't sit on the shelf, that it get's implemented and the people of Okotoks will see the benefit," he says.

Robertson says Council thanks all the volunteers on the Active Transportation Committee for their hard work.
