With the funding from the government Okotoks FCSS will open a new position to help address elder abuse response in Okotoks.

Okotoks Family and Community Support Services has received 50,000 dollars from the provincial government.

Through the Elder Abuse Co-ordinated Community Response Grant Program the money will allow FCSS to pursue making sure a coordinated response is in place to help combat elder abuse.

Debbie Posey, FCSS Manager, says she wasn't sure if they'd receive the funding when they applied last year with the shift in government ruling and budget changes.

Posey says this job will address a large concern.

"When I sort of floated the idea when the grant application came up every ones first response was 'well I'm not sure how big of a problem it is in Okotoks' and yet when I asked a very direct question, 'have you had someone report to you that they're concerned about an elder or elder abuse', every single person I spoke with said yes."

Posey explains this position will help ensure any issues are dealt with appropriately.

"Not only will we have a response in place and a support system in place for our seniors that are at risk of abuse but it will be well communicated to the community so everyone will know where to go for help."

Posey says they're currently drafting the paper work for the position and will have it posted in the next couple weeks.
