After months of tireless fundraising, and two years of growing her hair, nine-year-old Makayla Hinton cut off her long locks for a good cause in front of her Grade 3 class at Big Rock School Friday morning.

Joined by her mother, Kristine, and sister, Taylorwho cut her hair for the same cause three years agoelected for a shorter hairstyle in support of the Kids Cancer Care Foundation.

Not only is Makayla donating over $500 to the foundation, she'll also be donating her hair to Angel Hair for Kids, where it will be used to help make a wig for a child who's lost their hair due to cancer treatment.

Kristine Hinton says he could not be more proud of her daughter.

"It was a very big step for a nine-year-old to actually do something like this," she says. "Her hair was very long, she's been nervous all week, and excited, but I'm an extremely proud parentshe raised a lot of money."

Kristine says Makayla's been planning on cutting her hair for cancer for quite some time.

"This was her big thing that she wanted," she says. "She wanted to help kids, she wanted to raise money for kid's cancer research programs they do for the kids, and most of all, she wanted to be able to donate her hair, so she wanted it to be long enough to do that."

Kristine says Makayla was obviously nervous in the days leading up to the big moment.

"She has played with her hair all week," she says. "Every once in awhile, she'd say 'mom, you might want to touch my hair, this is the last time, would you like to brush it this morning?' So, I made sure I spent some time brushing her hair, because it was the very last time we got to brush the long locks."

Haley Schreiber and Hayley Copiak from the Cactus Club Salon and Spa in Okotoks volunteered their time to come in and cut Makayla's hair.

Makayla used her profits from her Lemonade Day stand to donate to the Kids Cancer Care Foundation, and also challenged local businesses to match her own $50 donation.
