With the Town of Okotoks officially putting their stamp of approval for a community market at the old creamery building site, plans have already started for the first market to be held.

July 3 will be the first of many markets held this summer with plenty of local vendors on display.

Market Organizer Bev Carlson says the market will be held every Sunday till October 30.

"We are trying to follow the Alberta Farmer's Market mandate of make it, bake it and grow it in Alberta," she says. :"so we're really having a heavy emphasis on produce from here, local artisans, lots of homemade value added items to the market."

Like most start up events Carlson says the market won't have as many vendor stands but over time hopes to see it grow enough to max out the creamery site's lot allowance facilitated by the Town.

"They actually approved a plan for 41 vendor spots. We don't anticipate having that many at the beginning this year, we're hoping to give each of the vendor booths rather than just one big long row of vendors so that everybody at the beginning will have a corner booth so there will be two sides exposed to the public instead of just the front."

Carlson says the market will just further the idea of shopping local and getting out to see what Okotoks has to offer.

"It's a beautiful location right down beside the river, easily accessible by the pathways, lots of parking in downtown on Sundays obviously. We'd love to have people come and check it out and vendors that we've got in so far are pretty neat and exciting and lots of different ones each Sunday."
