The Rowan House Women's Emergency Shelter has the chance to receive a bit of a boost.

The shelter is part of CIR Realty's In My Backyard contest where people can vote for the group to win $5,000.

Ally Cramm, community relations coordinator for the Rowan House, says the shelter knows how they'd use the funds.

"We've designated this contest money towards our in shelter program needs, so that would be basically anything needed to help women and children in terms of counselling and basic shelter operations."

Cramm says the great thing about the contest is that voters don't have to chose between the Rowan house and another popular cause.

"The people who are voting can only vote once per category. If they've already voted for the High River Water Tower project that's also in the running for the contest they can still vote us for because we're in a separate category from them so if they want to support two local things that would be great."

The deadline to vote is Oct. 10.
