Representatives from the Calgary Animal  Rights Movement and PETA or People For The Ethical Treatment of Animals peacefully demonstrated Thursday, May 14, in front of the Cargill Meat Plant north of High River.

Trev Miller with the group says they were trying to get Cargill to switch over to only packaging vegan meat substitutes.

“This slaughterhouse poses a threat not only to the animals who they kill but also to the workers by staying open despite over 1500 positive COVID-19 cases related to the facility. Cargill is already making vegan meat products so PETA is encouraging them to stop slaughtering animals altogether and focus on making only vegan meals.”

Miller says this is the best time for them.

“With this current global situation, there is no better time for us to work together with some of the other groups to get the best results for the people who work at the plants, their communities and the non-human animals who go to the plant for the end of their lives.”

The group says eating meat is not essential to a balanced diet

“We’d like to bring awareness to the devastating side of this industry, eating meat is not essential to human health the dietitians of Canada say you can get all of the nutrients that we need on a well planned vegan diet.”
