High River has their very own public piano.

Thanks to the efforts of Councillor Bruce Masterman, anyone with an interest can pound away on the ivory's all day every day.

Masterman says it took more than just him to get the piano to Town.

"Shlane Broomfield, a musician from Stavely, heard we were looking for a community piano. She put her feelers out and before you knew it, she found one in a barn in Millarville being stored and owned by a musician and piano tuner named Tim Burles from Sundre.'

Burles, who used to call High River home will come tune the piano over the next couple of days, and says he'll do it free for a year."

Carlson's Owner, Don Carlson, says he's all in favour of the idea, despite some early reservations.

"We're pleased as punch to have it here. We were a little bit nervous initially, we were thinking maybe the young kids in the evening might damage it or whatever, but I think most people now are very respectful of that sort of thing. It's a great addition to Third Avenue downtown."

Masterman says the piano is older than High River.

A quick check of the registry numbers show it was built in the late 1890's before High River was even incorporated as a Village in 1901, and a Town in 1906.

The piano will stay under a tent for the summer and then be stored in Highwood MLA, Wayne Anderson's Constituency office for the winter.
