Repairs to the swimming pool at the Tom Hornecker Recreation Centre (THRC) in Nanton is turning out to be more expensive than first thought.

Council approved an extra $12,000 at their last meeting on top of the $90,000 they already approved in December.

Mayor Jennifer Handley said once they started to fix the pipes they found more that were unsalvageable.

"It is 35 or 40 years old now, so it needs some serious maintenance," said Handley. "Every year were are putting tens of thousands of dollars into the pool and this year it involved fixing some pipes that were under the concrete."

Just how much longer the pool will be viable is a conversation that is also part of the discussions of the overall age of the THRC.

"It is part of a much larger discussion with our residents, with council, administration and the MD. As far as what do we need out of our THRC and our recreation and what are those long-term costs."

Along with the pipes new permanent in-water stairs into the pool will make getting in and out of the pool safer for Moms with tots, seniors, or others with mobility issues.

Because winter took so long to finally end the renovations were delayed and the pool will now open for the season on June 10th with a Grand Opening from 2 to 6 p.m. to celebrate the repairs with fun activities, treats, and music for the whole family.

All of their programs, lesson registration, and special events will be up and ready to go on Monday, May 28.

Registrations can be made by coming into the THRC on or after Monday, May 28 or by phone at 403-646-2522 starting on May 28th.
