While fire prevention week may seem like a yearly occasion for some, it's an everyday job for the Okotoks Fire Department.

The department is gearing up for fire prevention week with this years theme being "hear the beep where you sleep". It serves to remind people to place smoke detectors inside and outside of their bedrooms as well check their batteries regularly.

Pat Macisaac, fire fighter with the Okotoks Fire Department, says it's equally important for people to make sure they have a home escape plan in place.

"Find two ways out of every room in your home, practicing it with the kids, practicing it at least a couple times a year, making sure everybody has a safe meeting spot and making sure that this is something people know how to do when an emergency strikes so they're not having to think about it and it's second nature."

Macisaac says a carbon monoxide detector is another important addition to make to your home.

The Fire Department will be touring the town making sure residents are informed and educated.

"We're meeting with seniors on Monday we're having supper with them and doing some presentations based on seniors fire safety," he says. "We'll be out in a couple neighborhoods, we have a new program based on home inspections, we do a lot of business inspections in our fire program but now we're focusing on homes so we want to kick off that."

Fire prevention week kicks off on Saturday at Home Depot in Okotoks with kids workshops on fire safety. A barbeque will follow at the north fire hall at 1 p.m. rain or shine with demos and tours.
